If you've spent any time at a Sherwin-Williams counter, you've probably heard both names: Emerald and Duration. They sit right next to each other at the top of the lineup, cost about the same, and both promise a finish that lasts. So which one should go on your house?

• Pick Emerald when you want the best-looking finish, the best hide on tough color changes, and the smoothest application. It's Sherwin-Williams' flagship line.
• Pick Duration when durability and moisture resistance matter most — high-traffic interiors, kitchens and baths, or exteriors that take a beating — and you want to save a few dollars a gallon.

Both are excellent. Neither is a "bad" choice. The right one depends on where the paint is going and what it has to survive.

Retail prices change often and vary by store and promotion. Contractors usually buy at pro pricing, so your actual paint cost on a professional job will look different.

Emerald: When You Want It to Look Its Best

Emerald is the paint Sherwin-Williams puts its name behind as its best. Here's what that gets you:

Better hide.Emerald covers existing color more completely. If you're going from a dark navy accent wall to a soft white — or covering an old, faded exterior with a new color — Emerald often gets you there with fewer headaches.

Richer, more even color. Deep colors (think charcoal shutters, forest green front doors, or a moody dining room) come out more uniform and saturated.

Easier application. Emerald levels out nicely, which means fewer roller marks and brush lines. That shows up most on smooth walls, cabinets, and trim where every flaw catches the light.

Duration has been a contractor favorite for years, and for good reason.

Scrubbable.If you've got kids, pets, or a busy hallway, Duration stands up well to repeat cleaning.

What About Houston's Weather?

This is where it gets local. Paint in Houston has to deal with things paint in Denver never sees:

• Humidity. Our air is wet most of the year. Moisture pushes against paint from the outside and sometimes from behind the siding.
• UV. Long, hot summers fade and chalk exterior paint faster — especially on south- and west-facing walls.
• Mildew and algae. Shady sides of the house, under big oaks, and near sprinklers turn green fast.
• Storms. Hurricane season brings driving rain that tests every seam and caulk line.

Honestly? Both Emerald and Duration handle Houston well when they're applied correctly. The bigger difference in how long your paint lasts is almost always the prep work — pressure washing, scraping, patching, caulking, and priming bare spots — not the few-dollar difference between two premium paints. Cost: Does the Price Difference Really Matter?

Let's do the math on a typical exterior. An average two-story Houston home might need 15–20 gallons of finish paint for two coats. At a $5–$6 per-gallon difference, you're looking at roughly $75–$120 more to go with Emerald over Duration.

On a job that runs several thousand dollars in labor, that difference is small. So don't let price be the deciding factor — let the use decide. Want the best look and hide? Emerald. Need a tougher, thicker film in a tough spot? Duration.

Our Honest Recommendation

Here's how we usually guide homeowners on estimates:

1. Exterior, curb appeal, or a big color change: Emerald (or Emerald Rain Refresh if dirt and mildew are a problem).
2. Exterior with heavy wear, lots of shade, or sprinkler overspray: Duration is a great workhorse.
3. Living areas and bedrooms: Emerald for that smooth, rich finish.
4. Kitchens, baths, laundry, kids' rooms: Duration for moisture resistance and scrubbability.
