At Houston Superior Painting, we specialize in stucco painting using products designed specifically for Houston's challenging climate.
Challenges of Stucco in Houston
Houston's climate creates unique challenges for stucco:
- Temperature swings cause expansion and contraction
- Humidity promotes mold and mildew
- Heavy rains can penetrate hairline cracks
- UV exposure fades and degrades coatings
- Settling causes stress cracks
Standard paint often fails quickly on Houston stucco.
Elastomeric Coatings for Stucco
We recommend elastomeric coatings for most Houston stucco homes. These specialized products:
- Stretch and flex with temperature changes
- Bridge hairline cracks
- Create waterproof barriers
- Resist mold and mildew
- Last longer than standard paint
Our preferred product is Sherwin-Williams Conflex elastomeric coating.
Stucco Preparation Process
Proper stucco preparation includes:
- Pressure washing to remove dirt and mold
- Repairing cracks and damaged areas
- Filling gaps around windows and doors
- Applying masonry primer
- Allowing proper dry time
Skipping preparation leads to peeling and moisture problems.
When to Paint Stucco
Signs your stucco needs painting:
- Fading or chalky appearance
- Visible cracks
- Water stains
- Mold or mildew growth
- Peeling or flaking paint
How Long Does Stucco Paint Last?
Typical stucco paint life in Houston, with proper preparation:
- 5–7 years with elastomeric coatings (the Houston repaint cycle), and longer on shaded walls
- 3–5 years with standard exterior paint
Quality preparation significantly extends paint life. Stucco repaints are priced like any exterior; see the exterior house painting cost guide, where elastomeric coating adds $1–$2 per sq ft.
Popular Stucco Colors
Trending stucco colors in Houston include:
- Warm white
- Soft beige
- Light greige
- Warm gray
- Sand tones
