Common Painting Mistakes

Why Flat Paint Should Never Be Used in Bathrooms

The #1 mistake we see in Houston bathrooms - and how to fix it before mold takes over.

Bottom Line

Never use flat paint in bathrooms. It absorbs moisture, grows mold, stains permanently, and peels within 1-2 years in Houston's humidity. Use semi-gloss on all bathroom surfaces.

The Problem with Flat Paint in Bathrooms

Flat (matte) paint has no sheen, which means it has a porous surface that absorbs moisture rather than repelling it. In a bathroom where humidity spikes to 80-100% during showers, flat paint becomes a sponge.

What Happens Over Time

  1. Month 1-3: Paint absorbs moisture from steam and splashes
  2. Month 3-6: Water spots appear that won't wipe off
  3. Month 6-12: Mold spores take root in the paint's porous surface
  4. Year 1-2: Paint starts peeling, especially near the shower and ceiling

Why This Is Worse in Houston

Houston averages 75% outdoor humidity year-round. Your bathroom starts at a disadvantage before you even turn on the shower. Flat paint that might survive 3-5 years in Arizona will fail within 12-18 months here.

We repaint at least 2-3 bathrooms per month where the previous painter (often a DIYer or handyman) used flat or eggshell paint. The repair always costs more than doing it right the first time.

Our Recommendation: Sherwin-Williams Duration or SuperPaint

For bathroom walls in Houston, we use Sherwin-Williams Duration or SuperPaint in semi-gloss. Both have excellent mold and mildew resistance built into the formula, not just added as an afterthought.

Combined with proper surface prep and a moisture-blocking primer, these paints will last 8-10 years in a bathroom - vs. 1-2 years for flat paint.

What If Your Bathroom Already Has Flat Paint?

If you already see water stains, peeling, or mold spots, the paint needs to be removed and the surface treated before repainting. Simply painting over the problem traps moisture and mold underneath.

Our interior painting process includes mold treatment, proper priming, and the right finish to prevent this cycle from repeating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use flat paint in a half bath or powder room?
We still recommend against it. Even powder rooms have sinks that splash water and create humidity. Semi-gloss or at minimum satin is safer. Flat paint will eventually show water spots and become difficult to clean.
What if I already have flat paint in my bathroom?
You have two options: repaint with semi-gloss (recommended) or apply a clear protective topcoat. Repainting is better long-term because topcoats can yellow and peel in high-humidity environments.
Is eggshell okay for bathroom walls?
Eggshell is borderline acceptable for large bathrooms with excellent ventilation. However, for Houston's humidity levels, we still recommend semi-gloss on all bathroom walls and ceilings for maximum moisture protection.
What about the bathroom ceiling?
Bathroom ceilings need semi-gloss too. Steam rises and collects on the ceiling, making it prone to mold growth if painted with flat paint. This is especially important in Houston where humidity is already high.
