"Should I go with Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore?" This is probably the question I get asked most often by Houston homeowners. Both are premium paint brands with excellent reputations, and honestly, you can't go wrong with either one. But after using both extensively across hundreds of Houston homes since starting Houston Superior Painting in 2019, I've noticed some real differences worth discussing.
Let me be upfront: this isn't a sponsored post, and I don't have a deal with either company. I buy paint at full price (well, contractor price) just like any other painter. What I'm sharing here is based purely on my experience of what holds up best in Houston's challenging climate.
The Quick Answer
If you just want my bottom-line recommendation: For exterior painting in Houston, I slightly prefer Sherwin-Williams Duration or Emerald. For interior painting, it's essentially a tie—both Benjamin Moore Regal/Aura and Sherwin-Williams Cashmere/Emerald are excellent.
But the full answer is more nuanced. Let me break it down.
Exterior Paint Performance in Houston
Sherwin-Williams Duration vs. Benjamin Moore Aura Exterior
These are the flagship exterior products from each brand, and both are excellent. Here's how they compare in Houston conditions:
UV Resistance and Fade Prevention
Both paints offer excellent UV resistance, but in my experience, Duration holds its color slightly better on south and west-facing walls that get hammered by afternoon sun. Benjamin Moore's Color Lock technology is impressive, but I've seen slightly more fading on darker colors after 7-8 years compared to Duration.
Edge: Sherwin-Williams (slight)
Mold and Mildew Resistance
This is critical in Houston. Both paints contain mildewcides, but Duration seems to maintain its mold resistance longer. I've seen Benjamin Moore exteriors develop mold spots on north-facing walls around year 6-7, while Duration typically makes it to year 8-9 before needing treatment.
Edge: Sherwin-Williams
Adhesion and Flexibility
Houston's temperature swings (surfaces can go from 60°F at night to 140°F+ in afternoon sun) demand flexible paint. Both perform well, but Aura's advanced resin technology gives it slightly better flexibility. I've seen less cracking with Aura on surfaces that experience extreme temperature cycling.
Edge: Benjamin Moore (slight)
Application and Coverage
Duration is easier to apply and more forgiving. It self-levels better and is less prone to lap marks. Aura can be tricky—it dries fast and requires more skill to apply without visible brush or roller marks. For DIYers, Duration is definitely the safer choice.
Edge: Sherwin-Williams
Price
At the time of writing, Duration runs about $75-85 per gallon, while Aura Exterior is $80-90 per gallon. Not a huge difference, but Duration is slightly more economical.
Edge: Sherwin-Williams
Exterior Verdict
For Houston exteriors, Sherwin-Williams Duration gets my recommendation. The superior mold resistance, easier application, and slightly better value make it the winner. However, if you have a specific Benjamin Moore color you're in love with, Aura will absolutely perform well—just expect to pay a bit more and potentially see slightly faster mold development in shaded areas.
Interior Paint Performance
Sherwin-Williams Cashmere/Emerald vs. Benjamin Moore Regal/Aura
Interior paint in Houston doesn't face the same brutal conditions as exterior, but our high humidity does affect performance in bathrooms and kitchens. Here's how they compare:
Color Accuracy and Richness
This is where Benjamin Moore shines. Their color system is exceptional, and the depth of color you get with Aura or Regal is noticeably better than most Sherwin-Williams products. If you're using deep, rich colors, Benjamin Moore paints them more vibrantly.
Edge: Benjamin Moore
Durability and Washability
Both brands' premium lines are highly durable and washable. Sherwin-Williams Emerald and Benjamin Moore Aura are essentially tied here—both can handle scrubbing without losing their finish. For families with kids, either will perform well in high-traffic areas.
Edge: Tie
Coverage and Hide
Sherwin-Williams Emerald has incredible hide—it often covers in one coat even when making dramatic color changes. Benjamin Moore Aura is good but typically needs two coats for full coverage on color changes. This can save significant time and money on large interior projects.
Edge: Sherwin-Williams
Odor and VOCs
Both brands offer low-VOC and zero-VOC options. Benjamin Moore's Natura line is completely zero-VOC with minimal odor. Sherwin-Williams Harmony is their zero-VOC option. Both are excellent for households with chemical sensitivities.
Edge: Tie
Bathroom and Kitchen Performance
Houston bathrooms get humid, and paint needs to resist moisture. Both Aura Bath & Spa and Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel perform excellently in humid environments. For bathroom ceilings prone to mold, I give a slight edge to Sherwin-Williams for their better mildewcide formulations.
Edge: Sherwin-Williams (slight)
Interior Verdict
For interiors, it's essentially a tie. Choose Benjamin Moore if color accuracy is your top priority or if you're using deep, rich colors. Choose Sherwin-Williams if you want better coverage, easier application, or are painting bathrooms where mold resistance matters.
Availability in Houston
One practical consideration: Sherwin-Williams stores are everywhere in Houston. Benjamin Moore is sold through independent dealers and some Ace Hardware stores, which can make it less convenient to find.
For professional painters like me, this matters because we can run to a Sherwin-Williams store if we need an extra gallon mid-project. With Benjamin Moore, you need to plan ahead more carefully.
What About PPG and Behr?
I should mention that PPG (sold at PPG Paint stores and Home Depot as PPG Timeless) and Behr (Home Depot exclusive) are both solid options that cost less than premium Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore.
PPG Timelessis genuinely good paint—not quite at the Duration/Aura level, but close. It's a great value option if budget is a concern.
Behr Ultrahas improved significantly over the years. For interior use, it's surprisingly good. For exteriors in Houston, I still prefer the premium brands for their better UV and mold resistance.
My Recommendations Summary
Exterior - Houston Homes
- Best overall: Sherwin-Williams Duration
- Premium alternative: Benjamin Moore Aura Exterior
- Best value: Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint or PPG Timeless
- For stucco: Sherwin-Williams Conflex (elastomeric)
Interior - Houston Homes
- Best for rich colors: Benjamin Moore Aura or Regal Select
- Best coverage: Sherwin-Williams Emerald
- Best for bathrooms: Sherwin-Williams Emerald or Benjamin Moore Aura Bath & Spa
- Best value: Sherwin-Williams Cashmere or Benjamin Moore Ben
The Bottom Line
You really can't go wrong with either Sherwin-Williams or Benjamin Moore. Both make excellent paint that will hold up well in Houston. The differences I've described are relatively minor—we're talking about paint that lasts 12 years vs. 14 years, not 5 years vs. 15 years.
What matters much more than the brand is:
- Proper surface preparation (this is 80% of a good paint job)
- Using the right product for the application (don't use interior paint outside!)
- Applying the correct number of coats
- Painting in appropriate weather conditions
A well-applied coat of mid-range paint will outperform a poorly applied coat of premium paint every time. If you're hiring a painter, make sure they're taking preparation seriously—that's where the real difference in longevity comes from.
